A partner at the global investment firm StepStone Group, John Avirett draws upon his extensive venture capital experience and expertise in direct, secondary, and fund investing to help lead growth equity and venture capital investments. In addition, John Avirett is a board member with Altos Ventures, Scale Venture Partners, Silversmith Capital Partners, Elephant, Columbia Capital, Felicis Ventures, Meritech Capital, and Volition Capital. He is also a board observer for several companies, including Creatio, Salsify, Aviatrix Systems, Transcend, and Duplocloud.

Greenspring Associates

John Avirett previously served as a general partner at Greenspring Associates where he joined in 2005, which agreed to be purchased by StepStone in 2021. Among other accomplishments, he helped lead investments in Workfront (acquired by Adobe), Woowa Brothers (Acquired by Delivery Hero), and Scopely (Acquired by Savvy Games), and Chewy (CHWY- NYSE).  Additionally, John actively helped raise capital and recruit key senior team members across the Greenspring Associates and Stepstone Group’ venture capital platform.

Career History

John Avirett began his career as an associate at Zurich Financial Services, prior to which he obtained a bachelor of arts in political science with a minor in economics from Johns Hopkins University. He is also an alumnus of Gilman School, an all-boys pre-K through grade 12 academic institution that became the first country day school in the US in 1897.

Philanthropy

John Avirett is a donor to both Johns Hopkins and Gilman School. He helps foster job creation at Johns Hopkins through financial support of its FastForward U Innovation & Entrepreneurship Challenge and has delivered lectures to students through its Private Equity and Venture Capital club. He is a former honoree of the Baltimore Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 and played football at both Johns Hopkins and Gilman.
